There is a moment most homeowners recognize immediately: you press the remote, the garage door starts moving down, and then it reverses on its own for no obvious reason. No car in the way. Nothing on the floor. The door just stops and goes back up, sometimes blinking the opener light at you like it is trying to explain itself. Before you assume the opener is failing or a spring is going bad, the sensors are almost always the first thing worth checking. In over 20 years of garage door repair work across San Diego County, sensor issues are among the most common problems we are called out to diagnose, and they are also among the most commonly misread.

This post walks you through how your garage door sensors actually work, the specific signs that point to a sensor problem, what you can safely check on your own, and when the situation calls for a professional garage door sensor repair.


 How Your Garage Door Sensors Actually Work

Your garage door opener relies on a two-part photoelectric sensor system. One sensor, the sender, emits a continuous infrared beam across the bottom of the garage opening. The other sensor, the receiver, sits directly across from it and reads that beam. As long as that connection is solid, the garage door opener knows the path is clear to close. The moment something gets in the way, the receiver loses the signal, triggering the auto-reverse function.

Since January 1, 1993, federal law has required that garage door operators be manufactured with secondary entrapment protection devices, and photoelectric sensors are the most common means to provide that entrapment protection. This is governed by UL 325, the safety standard published by Underwriters Laboratories that covers residential garage door openers sold in the United States.

Photoelectric sensors should be mounted no higher than six inches above the ground. That specific height is not arbitrary. The rationale is to ensure the sensors can detect low-lying objects, small children, or pets that might be in the door’s path. If those sensors are misaligned, dirty, or damaged, the safety system that federal law requires your door to have is no longer working the way it should.


 Signs Your Garage Door Sensor Needs Repair

Sensor problems rarely announce themselves all at once. More often they show up as patterns easy to dismiss as random glitches until the behavior becomes consistent enough to notice.

The door reverses before it touches the ground

This is the most common symptom of a sensor issue. The opener reads the beam as broken, interprets it as an obstruction, and reverses. If there is nothing physically in the sensor path, the problem is either alignment, a dirty lens, or a failing sensor unit.

The opener light blinks when the door reverses

Most modern garage door openers use a blink pattern on the overhead light to communicate a diagnostic code. Count the blinks and check your opener manual. Sensor-related codes are among the most commonly referenced in those diagnostic charts.

The door only closes when you hold the wall button continuously

This is a clear indicator that the sensor circuit is not completing properly. While it gets the door shut in the short term, holding the wall button bypasses a federal safety requirement and should never be used as a long-term workaround.

One or both sensor lights are off, blinking, or the wrong color

A steady green light on the receiver and a steady amber or red on the sender typically indicates the sensors are aligned and communicating. Any light that is off, flickering, or showing an unexpected color points to a misalignment or wiring issue.

Nothing is blocking the sensors but the door still reverses

This is the scenario that trips up most homeowners. A garage door that worked fine yesterday and starts reversing today with nothing in its path often has sensors that have shifted just enough out of alignment that the beam is borderline. It connects sometimes and drops others, which is why the door works intermittently rather than failing completely. We have seen this repeatedly in San Diego homes where a car bumping a sensor bracket, or gradual loosening from vibration, shifts the angle just enough to cause problems.


 What You Can Safely Check Yourself

Clear the sensor path completely

Walk the full path between both sensors and remove anything that could be interrupting the beam, including garden tools, a broom handle, or even a spider web directly in the sensor’s line of sight.

Wipe the sensor lenses with a clean dry cloth

Dust and cobwebs accumulate on the small lenses over time and scatter the infrared beam enough to cause intermittent failures. This is particularly common in San Diego garages left open frequently, where coastal dust and fine debris settle on everything.

Check the sensor indicator lights

Both sensors should show a steady light. If one is off or flickering, the sensors are not communicating correctly.

Look at the sensor brackets

If a bracket has been bent, even slightly from a car bumping it or something falling against it, the sensor angle shifts enough to break the beam. You can sometimes see the misalignment visually. One sensor will be pointing slightly up or to the side instead of directly across at its partner.

Check whether direct sunlight is hitting the sensors

In the late afternoon, the sun’s angle in Southern California can shine directly into a south or west-facing garage and overwhelm the receiver sensor’s ability to read the infrared beam. If your door only fails at a certain time of day, sunlight interference is worth checking before assuming the sensors need replacement.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, the problem is inside the sensor unit itself or in the wiring between the sensors and the opener motor. That is where professional garage door sensor repair is the correct next step.


When Garage Door Sensor Repair Requires a Professional

Wiring damage between the sensors and the opener

The low-voltage wires that run from each sensor up to the opener unit can be damaged by staples, pinched by door hardware, or chewed through by pests. Tracing and repairing that wiring requires knowing the system and working inside the opener’s wiring terminal. It is not a homeowner’s task.

Opener logic board issues that mimic sensor failure

Some opener problems present exactly like sensor failures. The door reverses and the lights blink, but the actual fault is in the opener’s control board rather than the sensors themselves. Misdiagnosing this leads to replacing sensors that were working fine and leaving the real problem in place. This is the kind of situation where reading the full system, not just the obvious symptom, is what gets it fixed correctly.

Age of the system

Sensors on openers that are 15 years old or more may be reaching the end of their reliable service life. A full sensor replacement is often the more cost-effective path, particularly if the opener itself is also showing signs of age.


Why a Failing Sensor Is Not a Minor Issue

It is easy to treat a sensor problem as a nuisance rather than a safety concern. The door reverses, you press the button again, it closes. Problem solved for now. But that pattern means your door’s primary safety system is not functioning consistently. Federal law requires garage door operators to have at least two entrapment protection mechanisms, an inherent reversal system and either a photoelectric sensor or edge sensor, to mitigate the risk of injury to children, pets, and adults. When the sensor system is unreliable, one of those two required protections is gone.

A San Diego homeowner called us after two other companies had come out, tested the opener, declared it working fine, and left. The door was opening on its own at random hours, day and night. Sensor problems also create secondary damage over time. When the opener motor is forced to fight the safety system repeatedly, it puts additional strain on the motor, drive belt or chain, and the gears inside the motor unit. What starts as a sensor issue can accelerate wear on a much more expensive component if left unaddressed.
